Dear Kylie Jenner


Dear Kylie (and every other new mom feeling overwhelmed),

After seeing a social media post about being overwhelmed, I thought I'd reach out (whether or not it's true).  From a former single mom who has been in your shoes, I just want to let you know that it's OK to be overwhelmed and this new mom thing gets better. 

You can do this. It's hard as F&@%, but you can do this. Remember that it's a learning process, for both you and baby.  There is no shame in handing the baby to the nanny, grandma, friend, or anyone else willing to help to keep yourself sane.  As long as baby is safe, you're doing great!  And if someone offers help, you jump on that! Let them know how, even if it's just to hold the baby while you take a well-deserved nap. 

If those feelings don't ease up after a bit, talk to your doctor about Postpartum Depression.  Don't worry about the stigma, take care of yourself. You might not think you're that bad and it's no big thing, but in the long run, it helps.  It doesn't mean you're any less of a mom than anyone else (because we tend to tell ourselves such crap). Childbirth isn't a cake walk; your body and hormones are coming back from a roadside carnival roller-coaster ride - a little shaky, but trying to get it together.   So talk to the doc; it may be nothing, but it may be something they can help.

As I said, it gets better. You learn, they learn, and life gets a bit easier. You figure out what works for you guys and you roll with it.   And let me tell you, there is no better feeling in the world when you have those little successes - sleeping through the night, figuring out what makes them stop crying,  the wonderful baby smiles, potty training...  

It flies by faster than you can imagine.  This year will be gone before you know it, and the next thing you know, you have a 5th grader about to enter middle school.  Enjoy it.
