Three must have nursery items missing from your baby shower registry

As most experienced moms will tell you, half of the things on your baby shower list you will never use. I've seen several baby care items come and go that supposedly make newborn life easier – and most of them aren’t worth the money or the space they take up.

That being said there are a few things you won’t find on any baby registry list that only the most seasoned mothers know about. These items aren't expensive but worth their weight in gold!

And you know we’ve got the direct links to make life a little easy! Just click the images to go straight to amazon!

A Humidifier

Eventually, you will need this handy little item – often recommended by your pediatrician when your baby catches that first cold. Having this item ready to go in your nursery before you need it can make life so much better, especially when those allergies and viruses are high.

Now, there are a ton of fancy, aesthetically pleasing humidifier options out there – but I’m going to point you in a different direction.

As a mom who has gone through her fair share of humidifiers, I only recommend one model: the old-school, plain ol’ Vicks humidifier. It's also the cheapest, coincidentally.

I know you want to buy the cute one that matches the nursery but hear me out – This ugly Vick’s one is built to LAST. Every other fancy humidifier I purchased died within months and had expensive filters that always needed replacing.

This Vicks humidifier - you just add water and a little salt. It has lasted over 10 years and we use it frequently in my house. You can even add a little Vicks mix to the water for a medicated mist to clean the sinus and chest congestion quick!

A heating pad

Not only can you use this to sooth those aching muscles postpartum, but there’s a useful little trick very few new parents know about - one I only recently learned myself a few years ago.

Heating pads can also be used as a crib warmer.

Turn your pad on, lay it down in the crib or bassinet, and let it warm up your newborn’s sleep spot before putting them down to sleep.

*** Do NOT leave the heating pad in the crib with your baby**

We know newborn babies cannot regulate their body temperature and use our body heat to keep warm. That transfer from chest to bed is a challenge for many new parents with babies often waking right after being put down. The reason: The temperature change – transferring from a warm body to a cold bed. Warming baby's bed with a heating pad makes the transition much easier for you and your baby.

Air Vent Deflector

Along with the heating pad, nothing ruins a good newborn nap like a cold burst of air for the AC unit. An airflow director can keep the room comfortable while blocking that direct burst of air from falling over your baby.

They make a variety of deflectors to work with any air vent, from ceiling to floor.

If you tend to keep your house on the colder side, you can also add a magnetic cover over your air vent to block the air vent completely, keeping the nursery room warmer than the rest of the house.

If I’ve learned anthing in my 16 years in the parenthood, the Luvs commercial is right - “Live and learn, and then get Luvs”. Half the items on a general registry are useless, but you don’t know till you get there.

These three obscure items with help make those days with your newborn at home just a little bit easier. Because at Birth & Life Photography, you know it’s all about helping new parents stress less and get some rest.
